Don't Miss:
Machida Squirrel Park (Machida) - Get up close and personal with these cute, furry creatures. Have your child put on a special squirrel glove and feed them. They also have caged bunnies. Park entrance is about $5 for adults, $2 for children. Another $1 every time you run out of squirrel food. Machida-shi, 042-734-1001.
Matsumoto Castle (Nagano) - Japan's oldest donjon. Proud and majestic, it is a photographer's dream. If you can, go during the Taiko Festival in the summer. Plan to spend time in the neighboring park and streets.
GoMi Pile Hunting - You'll need to have a friend show you where the best gomi piles in your area are. What's a gomi pile? Community TRASH sites. You'd be surprised what Japanese people throw away. Gomi etiquette: If you see something with one drawer missing, leave it! That's the signal for everyone else that someone is coming back for it. This is not like dumpster diving at home. You can find big pieces of good furniture here!
Jogasaki Sea Cliff (Shizuoka) - Looking for a place to go rock-climbing? This is it. Great climb for intermediate and above climbers, with the ocean as a backdrop
Kamakura Horseback Archery (Yabusame) Festival (Fuji Area) - Watch warriors in traditional Samurai garb compete against each other.
Nagano Snow Monkey Park (Jigokudany-YaenKoen) - Want to share a hot tub with a monkey? Nah, not really. They have their own hot tubs, with others designated for homo sapiens. The pools are volcano fed and very warm.
Sagamihara Asimizo Park (aka Green Wave Park) - Go once and you'll end up living here :-). This is absolutely #1 when it comes to staying power. So much to do! And so close, just outside of Zama's back gate. You'll go again and again and again.
Yamashita Park (Yokohama) - Yokohama, city of 3 million, is a young person's paradise. One of the largest music stores in the world, shopping malls galore, clubs, and scenery. Yamashita is a waterfront park that's a great place to take in some of that scenery, rest, plan out your Yokohama day, and meet new friends. It's right next to Chinatown, and near the trains.
Yokohama Science Center - Science for all ages, though geared for elementary age. The science center is medium-sized, and chock full of interactive exhibits. Plan to spend a full day here.
